Chasing Rainbows

The ‘Storm of the Winter’ hit yesterday and against all advice, I spent several hours pounding the tarmac on various motorways. For a good part of the outward journey, we were riding in the eye of the storm.

And there, for the shortest of minutes, we were accompanied by a host of rainbows – coming from under, bouncing off and around the car.  I found no leprechaun or pot of gold, but it was dreamlike.  Magical.

I relayed this to a friend and he said that I was blessed. Maybe I am.  All the more reason to keep chasing rainbows.

A rainbow from my past:

A rainbow I once chased

Addendum: Weirdly as I publish this, ‘Chasing a Rainbow’ by the mighty Terry Hall played out on my jukebox. Hmmmm.

Bristol is becoming highrise on the sly, I’ve noticed;  extra floors being added onto old buildings,  progressive demolitions making way for incrementally taller buildings (invariably housing tiny flats), towers being built in the low lying parts of town or in ways that their sheer mass is concealed.  You can see how much the skyline is changing from the top of Castlemead, (for now) the tallest building in Bristol, our very own Far Away Tree.  Here is a very different perspective – I struggle to recognise the city that I feel I know like the back of my hand.

The travesty that is the Cabot Circus shopping centre development, home to several hundred migrant builders for the next year

Back down the slippery slip, I was sad to see the work at the Old Courage Brewery.  And shocked to see how much has been torn down.  I used to take a detour on my way into work just to have my breath taken away by it each morning.  I don’t think anyone expected that such a beautiful building wouldn’t be kept intact.

A crying shame.

RIP

The Courage Brewery RIP

In my innocence, I once believed (not just thought, but actually believed) that there were no endings, only continuings.

But yesterday, there was an ending. And today is a beginning.
